I don’t usually tell my boys that we are going to do something fun until RIGHT BEFORE we do it. They can’t really comprehend time too well, and it’s easier if I wait until the perfect moment to declare that we are about to do something AMAZING. I had found a recipe on Pinterest for homemade donuts and I’ve been wanting to try it with the boys, but never had the right chance. Last week, we had a fantastic evening at home; the kind where dinner is yummy, everyone gets along, and everyone has FUN. So after dinner I announced that we WERE GOING TO MAKE DONUTS. I haven’t seen happier kids. HA. So I pulled up the step stool, and Jay pulled out the camera to snap photos of us decorating the donuts.
Side note- I had already baked the donuts AND cooled them ahead of time. So these photos are of us enjoying the evening decorating them together.
I have two little very picky eaters on my hands, SO they didn’t really want to try OR enjoy this homemade goodness. BUT, Jay and I ate them and OH. MY. GOSH. They were SO yummy. Jay even said that these were the best donuts he’s ever had. EVER.
That’s a win in my book, people.
Check out the photos from our evening. And here’s the recipe if you’d like to make your own. They were simple with simple ingredients. They come out to approximately 200 calories a donut. SCORE.
3/4 cup sugar
1 large egg
1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
2 tsp baking power
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
1/4 cup vegetable oil
3/4 cup milk (low fat is fine)
1 tsp vanilla extract
1. Preheat oven to 350F. Lightly grease a mini donut pan with cooking spray or vegetable oil.
2. In a large bowl, beat together sugar and egg until light in color.
3. In a small bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt and nutmeg. Pour into egg mixture and stir to combine. Pour in vegetable oil, milk and vanilla extract.
4. Fill donut pan to about 3/4 full.
5. Bake for 11-12 minutes.
6. Decorate donuts after they have cooled.
